Product Inspiration Story

A love Letter To A By Gone Era

We can look to great eras not only for inspiration but as a compass for excellence. For this reason, I tell budding chefs to fill their shelves with two kinds of books: recipe books for what they wish to learn and history books for who they wish to become.

Consider the 1920s, a personal favourite of mine, and one that came alive for me in the most unexpected time and place. Across the globe and a century later, I found its spirit lingering in The Atlas, Singapore’s bar and loveletter to the bygone era. It was there I experienced the decade’s mastery of nuance. It wasn’t just the jazz, the lavish lifestyles, or the social changes that defined the Twenties but its focus on small yet transformative details. The intricate beading of a flapper's dress, the twist of a speakeasy cocktail garnish, and the striking lines of Art Deco motifs - each element, no matter its size, played a pivotal role in crafting the era’s iconic style. A style, both subtle and profound, that still dazzles and inspires today.

And so, I encourage my fellow chefs to change it up and think small. While hard work and tenacity are essential, it is the bold, deliberate choices we make that transform our dishes into signature masterpieces and hard work into a meaningful career. The kind of career that’ll not only feature your work in cookbooks but also etch your story in history.

Inspired by the lines of Art Deco design, The Atlas pays tribute to the significance of the little things- the small yet transformative details that turn dishes into artistry and hard work into remarkable careers.
